Our ophthalmological basic diagnostics

We offer comprehensive examinations of your eyes. Of course, these serve first of all to detect pathological changes in the eyes, but they also provide important information about general diseases (e.g. High blood pressuremetabolic disorders, Risk of strokediabetes, Rheumatism etc.).

  • Examination of your visual function incl. possible determination of visual aids
  • Checking color vision and stereo vision
  • Biomicroscopic examination to assess the anterior segment of the eye including the skin and edges of the eyelid, corneal surface, checking your contact lenses for fit, function and compatibility, diagnosis of "cataracts
  • Measurement of intraocular pressure and assessment of the optic nerve head as part of glaucoma prevention (early detection of glaucoma)
  • Prevention of macular degeneration and retina
  • Examination and therapy conjunctivitis

Diagnostics & therapy of the most important eye diseases

You have a "red eye? The eyelids are stuck together or swollen? A foreign body in the eye? Have pain? See flashes, black spots etc.? For acute eye problems such as these, we are happy to facilitate an acute appointment at short notice. Please note: For people with statutory health insurance, a visit to our clinic is a self-pay service.

Most eye diseases start insidiously and are not noticeable to those affected in the early stages. Therefore, we recommend an annual ophthalmological check-up every two years for everyone from the age of 40 and from the age of 60.

In addition to your visual acuity and spectacle correction, we examine all sections of the eye from the cornea to the optic nerve and can give you an informed assessment of the state of your eye health and possible signs of eye disease.

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerves that can lead to progressive loss of vision and is usually caused by excessive intraocular pressure. In treatment, it is important to control the optic nerve and especially the peripheral vision closely and to lower the intraocular pressure so that the endangered nerve tissue of the optic nerves is not or not further damaged. In this way, loss of vision can usually be averted.

Changes in the retina and the site of sharpest vision (macula) can alter the ability to see. With the frequent so-called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), but also with consequences of diabetes or vascular occlusions in the eye, distortions in vision (metamorphopsia) occur, which can affect one eye or both eyes. With precise imaging of the retina (OCT), we can identify dry changes or tissue swelling (oedema) and treat them specifically.

Clouding of the lens usually progresses slowly and leads to a cataract in the long term. Many people affected are initially unaware of their cataract or gradually experience an increasing sensitivity to glare, e.g. when driving in the evening. In our examination, we always also carry out an assessment of the lens and can often detect early changes before symptoms appear and assess when a lens exchange is necessary. This involves replacing the clouded lens with an artificial lens in a minor operation. The operation also makes it possible to compensate for a refractive error such as short-sightedness or long-sightedness with the new lens.

Many people experience burning and irritated eyes, which can be related to office and PC activities, but also to other environmental factors. Seasonal influences such as pollen count can also increase the discomfort. Often, a rough ocular surface is found on the cornea and conjunctiva, which can usually be attributed to a tear film disorder or insufficient production of tear fluid. We therefore carry out a precise diagnosis of the tear film and the surface of the eye and can alleviate the discomfort through targeted wetting therapy.

Many general diseases such as Rheumatism, Diabetes, High blood pressure or Thyroid disease can lead to eye problems. Thanks to the unique interdisciplinary orientation of the MEDIZINICUM, we offer hand-in-hand care together with the individual disciplines involved. Short distances and close coordination enable close joint coordination in diagnostics and therapy and prevent unnecessary detours or contradictory information.

OCT angiography (OCT=optical coherence tomography) is a relatively new diagnostic method that enables rapid and non-invasive imaging of the vascular structures in different retinal layers as well as in the choroid. Further information ...
