Rare Diseases Hamburg

Centre for rare diseases

Orphan diseases are diseases that affect at most one in 2,000 people. In total, more than 6,000 rare diseases have been described and new ones are still being discovered all the time.

Almost all genetic disorders are rare diseases, but there are also many rare infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, rheumatism and even cancer. However, the causes of most rare diseases are unknown.

Due to its special expertise the Klinikum Stephansplatz of MEDIZINICUM Hamburg is listed as a centre of excellence in the international competence portal "Orphanet" as well as in the care atlas for rare diseases of the Federal Ministry of Health.

Disease patterns in rare diseases

Rare diseases are usually serious, often chronic and progressive diseases, which usually manifest themselves only in adulthood, although they are congenital. Due to the small number of cases, most doctors lack the necessary experience to diagnose and treat rare diseases as quickly as possible. In addition, these complex clinical pictures often cannot be classified within the rigid boundaries of an organ- or specialty-related symptomatology, as they affect several, often very different specialties.

This is particularly true for diseases of the immune system and metabolism, which cause a variety of symptoms in very different organs. Although they place a heavy burden on the affected patients and are not infrequently even life-threatening, such clinical pictures are often not recognised for a long time. The diagnosis of rare diseases is therefore a domain of interdisciplinary medicine, as practised at the MEDIZINICUM Hamburg.

Here, a team of experienced experts in the fields of rheumatology/clinical immunology, pediatric rheumatology and human genetics in cooperation with all other departments represented in the MEDIZINICUM combines the findings into an overall picture and develops a jointly coordinated treatment strategy that is individually tailored to the needs of each patient.

Although large hospitals often have medical equipment and personnel comparable to that of the Medizinicum Hamburg, the decisive difference is the close cooperation of experts across the boundaries of the disciplines. Especially when dealing with complicated questions and demanding detective work in search of the cause of mysterious symptoms, a well-rehearsed team of experienced doctors is best able to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
