Holistic care for risk factors

A woman's heart: why it beats particularly well during the menopause
Women are unique, and so are their hearts. But did you know,
that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women
? In fact, twice as many women
died from high blood pressure in Germany in 2021 than men.

What changes during the menopause?
In the years around the menopause, many women experience a number
of changes in their bodies. One of these is the decline in the
hormone levels of oestrogen and progesterone. Until
then, these hormones not only had an influence on reproduction, but also provided protection for
the heart. Unfortunately, as these hormones fall, the risk of
cardiovascular disease also increases, especially if other risk factors
are present.

Listen to your body's signals
A third of all women report significant symptoms during the
menopause. These include not only the typical hot flushes, but
also palpitations and mood swings. It is important to take these
symptoms seriously and seek advice.

Let us advise you
Our interdisciplinary team includes specialists from the fields of gynaecology (Dr. Klöpper and team from Gynäkologikum Bergedorf), endocrinology (PD Dr. Iwen and team, Neuer Wall), complementary medicine (Dr. Wüsthoff), psychotherapy (Prof. Stirn), nutritional advice (Ms. Fuhrbach) and physiotherapy. In this way, we guarantee women comprehensive and holistic diagnostics and advice.

Do you know the risk factors for your heart health?
As we get older, we experience various changes in our bodies and it becomes increasingly important to take care of our heart health. You are probably already aware of some of the risk factors, but did you know that there are specific risks that particularly affect women?

General risk factors you should be aware of:

  • High blood pressure
  • Elevated blood lipid levels
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Overweight
  • Unhealthy lifestyle, e.g. lack of exercise or unbalanced
    diet
  • Smoking

Women-specific risk factors recognized since 2011:

  • Early menopause
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Premature birth of your child
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (many small cysts on the ovaries)
  • Autoimmune diseases (when the body fights against its own cells)
  • Chronic inflammation in the body

Other gender-related risks that you should consider you should consider:

  • Mental strain and stress
  • Lack of women-specific knowledge about health issues
  • Experienced violence in the relationship
  • Harmful environmental factors

It's not always easy to recognize these risks or to know how to deal with them. But the good news is: you're not alone! If you think that one or more of these factors might apply to you, don't hesitate to seek advice.
