MRT - Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), also known as nuclear spin tomography, is a radiation-free and therefore particularly gentle imaging diagnostic procedure. Magnetic fields and radio waves can be used to image human organs, bones and tissue. Since no side effects are known, MRI is used in a variety of ways, sometimes as an alternative to other procedures such as computer tomography (CT).

In our radiology practice in Hamburg, we work with the most modern MRT devices currently available, such as the Hochfeld-3 Tesla-MRT, with which the different tissues can be very clearly displayed and reliably distinguished from each other.

Indication Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRT)

Especially in cancer screening, gentle MRI offers a good possibility for early detection, but also for staging of already diagnosed tumors. In colorectal cancer screening, MRI can be used instead of multi-line spiral computed tomography, as well as in young patients with special questions regarding chronic bowel inflammation such as Crohn's disease.

MRI is also used in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases, for example in the form of a cardio MRI for the examination of circulatory disorders of the heart muscle or during a vascular check (arteriosclerosis).

MRI is particularly important for diagnosing early changes in the musculoskeletal system. With the help of MRI, bones and in particular joint soft tissues and cartilage can be very differentiated and examined for degenerative changes.

MRI technique

The MRI examination is completely non-invasive, i.e. it does not involve any intervention in the body. Depending on the question and tolerance, the injection of a contrast medium may be necessary.

With the help of magnetic fields and radio waves, the tomograph generates several sectional images of the body from different perspectives. These are then processed by a computer into a three-dimensional image on which the treating physician can virtually examine your body.

Individual MRI specialities

In individual cases, the MRI examination cannot be used, especially if the patient has metal parts (a contraceptive coil) or electrical devices (pacemakers) in the body. Recently it has become possible for us to examine patients with certain cardiac pacemakers using MRT.

Individual particularities are discussed in a detailed doctor-patient consultation before the examination in Imaging Diagnostics. If MRI is not an option for you, alternative methods such as multi-line spiral computed tomography (MSCT) can be used as an alternative.
