Autoimmune diseases are diseases in which the cells of the immune defence are directed against the body's own structures as part of an inflammatory reaction. In principle, autoimmune processes can occur in all organs of the body, which is why all medical disciplines have to deal with specific autoimmune diseases.
Often autoimmune diseases manifest as systemic diseases or syndromes, i.e. different organs are affected at the same time and several symptoms occur in parallel. Therefore, interdisciplinary cooperation is of crucial importance and indispensable, especially since the diagnosis can resemble a real detective work due to the large number of possible constellations of findings. Here at the MEDIZINICUM Hamburg, the clarification of the possible presence of an autoimmune disease is usually coordinated by our experienced rheumatologists, who draw on the large network of competent colleagues from other disciplines for interdisciplinary cooperation.
