People with diabetic foot syndrome, doctors and podiatrists know a lot about it, but almost nobody knows about scleroderma foot problems. Among other things, Raynaud's phenomenon, which also occurs in the feet, can lead to open sores and cause massive problems. Enormous pain is caused mainly by the loss of substance in the fatty tissue under the sole of the foot. Those affected complain that they walk as if on skin and bones. In addition to the resulting calluses and incorrect weight-bearing, calcinosis, a variant of CREST, is a major problem. Systemic scleroderma, are a major problem.
Scleroderma Self-Help has published a very informative brochure "Darauf steh ich - Fußprobleme bei Sklerodermie", primarily for those affected, but also for doctors and especially for podiatrists. The author, Emma Margarete Reil, has not only looked at the feet of many affected people, she has also listened to their problems and worries, taken valuable tips with her and systematically worked them up into a good guide. The 80-page brochure is available from Sklerodermie Selbsthilfe e.V. Am Wollhaus2, 74072 Heilbronn, at a price of 7.50 euros including postage.
