What is Crohn's disease? Diagnosis and treatment.

What is Crohn's disease?

Crohn's disease, a multifaceted chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive tract, manifests itself in a range of challenges that can extend from the oral cavity to the anus. In most cases, the small intestine and large intestine are affected by the inflammatory processes. The origin of this disease lies in a dysregulated immune response in which the body attacks its own tissue. Genetic, immunological and environmental factors play a complex role here.

Manifestation and symptoms

The clinical manifestations of Crohn's disease are extremely varied and affect more than just the gastrointestinal tract. The most common symptoms include not only abdominal pain, diarrhea, weight loss and fatigue, but also extraintestinal (outside the gastrointestinal tract) manifestations that can affect the skin, joints, spine, eyes and other organs. The course of the disease is characterized by relapses in which phases of activity and remission alternate.

Diagnosis and examinations

The diagnosis of Crohn's disease requires a careful and comprehensive examination. This involves the use of modern diagnostic technologies such as endoscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and laboratory tests. A precise diagnosis is crucial for the development of a customized treatment plan.

Therapy options

In terms of treatment options, the focus is on applying the latest medical findings. In addition to established methods such as anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressants such as azathioprine, innovative biologics such as the TNF-alpha blocker adalimumab and infliximab are also used. These drugs specifically target inflammatory processes in the intestine and can often achieve long-term remission.

New therapy options

Current research results open up exciting perspectives in the treatment of Crohn's disease. New therapeutic options, including Janus kinase inhibitors such as upadacitinib and tofacitinib, show promising approaches to controlling the inflammatory processes and could represent an effective alternative, particularly for patients who do not respond sufficiently to conventional therapies.

Surgical options

In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove inflamed sections of bowel or to treat complications. Here, close collaboration between experienced surgeons and gastroenterologists is crucial in order to develop an optimal treatment strategy.

Improving quality of life with Crohn's disease

Improving the quality of life of Crohn's disease patients requires a multidisciplinary team consisting of gastroenterologists, surgeons, nutritionists and psychologists. Through joint efforts, not only the physical symptoms of the disease can be addressed, but also the psychosocial aspects can be taken into account to ensure comprehensive care.
