Muscle pain caused by cholesterol reducers often underestimated

With a special consultation hour for the diagnosis and therapy of patients who urgently need cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) but cannot tolerate these drugs, Stephansplatz Hospital is responding to a previously underestimated problem. Up to five percent of patients suffer from muscle pain and other side effects during statin therapy. However, these symptoms can also have other, often rheumatological causes. At the Stephansplatz Clinic, the lipid metabolism expert Prof. Dr. F. Ulrich Beil and the rheumatology team led by Dr. Keihan Ahmadi-Simab are therefore working closely together to differentiate statin intolerance from other diseases and to initiate targeted therapy...
